Community Speed Watch

Mareham le Fen Parish Council is organising a team of trained volunteers to tackle speeding in the village. Can you spare any time to help?

Speeding is a constant issue through Mareham le Fen raised often by residents at recent parish council meetings.

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership is now training volunteers to measure and record the speed of vehicles travelling through the village and to report those identified during speed watch shifts to Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership and persistent offenders to Lincolnshire Police.

The aim is to reduce the average speed through our community and to remind drivers caught speeding in the area that there can be consequences if they are caught.

Local volunteers working in small teams of three people will identify those vehicles that are speeding and be able to report this information to the Community Speed Watch team.  Drivers identified as exceeding the speed limit are then contacted by post initially and if they are identified again they may have a personal visit from local Police to remind them of their poor driving and what they can do to improve.  We are sure the Police car parked outside the house and a Police Officer visiting the household will help remind the driver that they are now known and if they are caught speeding again the consequences may be more serious.

We need enough volunteers to be able to monitor speeds on a regular basis in the village usually for a shift of two or three hours at least once or more a month to make this initiative have a good impact on average speeds in the village.

If you are willing to get trained and join this community initiative please send your details to the email address below with 'Community Speed Watch' in the subject and in the email your name, first line of your address and phone number so that it can be added to a list of volunteers for the training sessions to be organised.  The most successful schemes are those with enough volunteers to ensure regular patrols can be undertaken.  Residents can make a difference to their community and you might meet a few new friends and neighbours you didnt know before.

The parish council is very grateful for the people who have indicated that they would like to take part so far but more are welcome.  The equipment has been purchased and training is being organised to take place on Monday 4th March 2024 starting 6pm.  The locations for the team to operate from have been agreed with Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.  The scheme is sponsored and supported by Lincolnshire Police who insure the scheme.
