The Mareham le Fen Parish Council is made up of 9 elected members - comprising the Chair, Vice-Chair and 7 members - who voluntarily work for the benefit of the community and all local residents. The Parish Council is fully accountable and subject to detailed audit. The council publishes information about its activities and the decisions it makes in the local noticeboards and this website so that it is transparent and open. Certain matters are confidential and cannot be disclosed according to law.
The Clerk to the Parish Council is a part-time paid employee whose role includes managing the council's finances, preparing reports, policies, arranging meetings, agendas, minuting meetings, implementing decisions, contacting suppliers and other organisations, managing the website and dealing with correspondence.
Meetings of the Mareham le Fen Parish Council are held monthly except during December and are normally on the third Wednesday of each month in the Community Centre, Mareham le Fen, commencing at 7:30pm. Residents may attend full council meetings and can speak briefly on village and other parish matters at 7.15 pm before the commencement of the meeting. From time to time the parish council may also hold other meetings at other times to consider urgent matters that cannot wait until the regular meeting or the issue needs more time than is possible in a regular meeting. These are also open to the public to observe unless the matter is confidential as defined in law.
The main duties for the Parish Council are set out in law but many local issues will come up that may need the parish council to consider
- stautory consultee on planning matters representing the views of the local community (East Lindsey District Council makes the decision)
- mantaining and managing the cemetery in Mareham le Fen
- obtaining funds and support for projects that may benefit the village and parish
- liaising with District and County Councillors and the local Member of Parliament on local matters
- maintaining benches, noticeboards and other local amenity areas including local grass-cutting on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council
- annually account for its spending of public funds and ensuring adequate insurance is in place.
All parish councillors are either elected for a four-year term or for the remainder of a term if they fill a casual vacancy by election. The parish council may also co-opt individuals onto the parish council to fill vacancies not filled by election. If interested please contact the Parish Clerk for more details.
The parish councillors are volunteers and are not paid any allowance, however, they may receive paid-for training and out-of pocket expenses in accordance with the approved Expenses Policy.
The current parish councillors are Chair of the Council, Councillor M Percival, Vice Chair D. Hill, and councillors P. Bourn, S. Millen and P. Chilvers. These may be contacted through the Clerk if you do not know them personally. The parish council also has one committee dealing with Staffing/ Employment matters chaired by D. Hill and other members are P. Bourn and P. Chilvers.
Most matters considered by the parish council can be discussed in public meetings and the minutes published, however, some matters listed in Local Government Act 1972 Schedule 12A may be discussed in a private meeting excluding the media and the public and these minutes are exempt from publication.
